Tigers upend Panthers

PAINTSVILLE — Paintsville quarterback Jake Hyden tossed a pair of touchdown passes to Tanner Smith and the defense shut down Pikeville as the Tigers scored a 28-0 win in a game played at Memorial Field on Sept. 8.

 

Smith rushed for 76 yards and one touchdown on nine carries and hauled in two passes for 86 yards as the Tigers improved to 3-1. Running back Tyrese Allen rushed eight times for 51 yards and a late score.

 

Hyden completed 4 of 9 passes for 94 yards. Jackson Hensley had three receptions for 34 yards.

 

Pikeville running back Zach Roberts carried 17 times and was held to just 24 yards. Quarterback Peyton Boyd-Blair converted on 7 of 20 passes for 56 yards. He was picked off once as the Panthers fell to 1-2.

 

Hyden tossed a 29-yard touchdown pass to Smith with 5 minutes, 31 seconds left in the opening period to put the Tigers ahead to stay. Seth Trador added his first of four PAT kicks to make it 7-0.

 

Paintsville extended its lead to 14-0 at the break when Smith hauled in a 57-yard touchdown pass from Hyden on the first play of the second quarter.

 

Smith's third touchdown came on a fourth-down play when he started left and reserved his field and race 33 yards with 3:19 to go in the third period to push the Tigers up 21-0.

 

Allen capped the scoring with a short five-yard touchdown run with 1:54 remaining in the game.

 

Paintsville will host Williamsburg (3-1) and Pikeville travels to Belfry (2-1) tonight.
