Pikeville Medical Center (PMC) recognized its eighth DAISY Award winner, Emergency Department registered nurse, Gabrielle "Gabby" Bailey. The DAISY Award is a national recognition initiative that recognizes extraordinary nurses for the work they do for patients and families each day.

Bailey was honored during a surprise ceremony at the hospital on Dec. 28.

"I am so impressed with our nursing staff, nurses like Gabby make our patients and their families feel at ease in what can be confusing and uncertain situations," said PMC Chief Operating Officer/Assistant Chief Executive Officer Donovan Blackburn. "Their kindness and compassion really demonstrate what serving others is all about."

PMC Chief Nursing Officer Michelle Rainey commended Bailey for representing PMC with compassionate care.

"With our Emergency Department being our front line at PMC, nurses like Gabby are the ideal individuals we need to represent our facility," Rainey said. "Congratulations to Gabby on this much-deserved award."

Bailey was nominated for the DAISY Award because of the care she provided to a PMC Emergency Department patient.

Nomination Letter

My husband has late stage Alzheimer's. He was not an easy patient grabbing and yelling but she was so patient with him. She would talk sweetly and tried to help him in every way possible. I was having a bad time too; at times, breaking down and crying.

She hugged, sat, and listened to me. Sometimes the smallest gestures are the ones that mean the most. Please don't get me wrong, there are so many loving and deserving workers here and I am so very thankful for each and every one. Gabby Bailey (ED) really deserves credit for her love, compassion and devotion. She has been our nurse before and has always treated my husband with dignity. It was such a blessing to have her as our nurse. She truly made a huge difference to us during a difficult time.

"Gabby is an extraordinary nurse that goes above and beyond every shift," said PMC Emergency Department Director Dale Morton. "She is caring, compassionate and exemplifies the term 'leading by example'. Gabby works as a seasoned nurse with ten or more years of experience and is a huge asset to our Emergency Department, as well as our community."

Bailey was selected from a number of registered nurses who were also nominated for this prestigious award.

"I'm so honored to be a recipient of the DAISY Award," Bailey said. "I'm humbled that a family of a patient I cared for found it fitting for me to be nominated for this award. It's truly a blessing to think that you can be helpful in someone's time of need. To me, that's what nursing is about."
