Americans celebrate Memorial Day on the last Monday of May each year.
A national moment of remembrance takes place when the president visits Arlington National Cemetery. Flags around the country are also flown at half-mast from dawn until noon as an honor to lost heroes.
Several events are happening during Memorial Day weekend and several tributes and gospel sings are scheduled to be held in Floyd, Letcher and Pike counties.
One of the most popular events is Thacker Memorial Funeral Home’s 30th Annual Memorial Day Tribute, initiated three decades ago by funeral home owner Larry Thacker at the Annie E. Young Cemetery on Chloe Road in Pikeville.
The cemetery is home to thousands of graves, including 1,500 graves that were relocated when Fishtrap Dam was constructed.
The funeral home will provide free American flags for visitors to use to decorate military graves, and several events will be held throughout the weekend.
Events include a memorial service at 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 25, a gospel sing featuring special guest Bob Smallwood from Living Faith TV from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday, a memorial service at 10 a.m. on Monday and a flag dedication at 1 p.m. on May 27.
All events are free and open to the public. For more information, call 606-432-1800.
