PIKEVILLE — Three Pikeville Medical Center physicians are once again listed among the nation’s best doctors.

Cardiologist Dr. Bill Harris, Cardiothoracic Surgeon Dr. Dennis Havens and Internal Medicine Specialist Dr. John R. Furcolow were nominated for the 2012-13 Best Doctors in America list.

These doctors are among 12 general cardiovascular disease specialists, 12 thoracic surgeons and 10 internal medicine specialists who made the Best Doctors’ cut in Kentucky.

The list includes doctors in 45 specialties and more than 400 subspecialties of medicine.

“Pikeville Medical Center congratulates Drs. Harris, Havens and Furcolow,” said PMC President/CEO Walter E. May. “We are honored to have three ‘Best Doctors’ caring for our patients.  Quality physicians providing quality health care is a big reason why patients are coming through our doors in record numbers.”

Four other local physicians affiliated with PMC were also listed as Best Doctors. They include Obstetricians/Gynecologists Dr. John Barton and Dr. Douglas Milligan, and Pediatric Cardiologists Dr. Louis Bezold and Dr. Douglas Schneider.

This list represents the top 5 percent of doctors in the United States, selected from more than 47,000 physicians practicing 400 specialties and subspecialties.

“We are fortunate to have these physicians on our Medical Staff who are recognized as America`s Best Doctors,” said Dr. William Johnson, Pikeville Medical Center Chief Medical Officer and former Best Doctor. “I know that the Pikeville Medical Center staff and all of their patients appreciate each physician for achieving this high honor. We wish them continued success in providing the best care for patients.”

Experts who are part of the Best Doctors in America database provide the most advanced medical expertise and knowledge to patients with serious conditions – often saving lives in the process by finding the right diagnosis and  providing the right treatment.

The prestigious award is bestowed only on doctors who earn the consensus support of their peers and meet additional qualifications. Physicians were nominated by other doctors in America who were asked questions like, “If you or a loved one needed a doctor in your specialty, to whom would you refer them?”

According to Best Doctors Inc., physicians on the list are chosen by their own peers for one simple reason: they are among the best.

Doctors have unique, “inside” perspective about who’s at the top of their profession, who’s up on the latest advances in their field, and therefore, where they personally would turn for state-of-the-art care when faced with a serious medical problem.

Best Doctors Inc. has an excellent worldwide reputation for reliable, unbiased results. Physicians are not able to pay to be included in the database and are not paid to provide their input.

The organization, accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education, is dedicated to improving the quality of health care by connecting people and physicians with the “best talent” and “top minds” in medicine.

As part of the database, doctors and patients from across the world can seek the expertise of PMC physicians Harris, Havens and Furcolow. These doctors also have access to the database to seek consultation and information from other Best Doctors.
