High School postseason: Letcher Central eliminated; Lady Panthers in title game

JACKSON — Letcher Central was limited to just a pair of hits as Hazard eliminated the Cougars from the 14th Region tournament with a 5-0 win in a game played at Breathitt County High School on May 30.

 

Central closed out its season at 19-15 while the Bulldogs, now 29-8, advanced to the finals against Perry County Central.

 

Max Baker went the distance and suffered the loss. He allowed only two earned runs. John Potter had one hit and walked twice.

 

Devin Morris struck out 14 batters and allowed two walks.

BUCKLEYS CREEK — Johnson Central’s Trevor May went the distance tossing a three-hit shutout to lead the Golden Eagles to a 10-0 win in the opening round of the 15th Region tournament being played at Pike County Central on Memorial Day.

 

It was the last sporting event in Allen Central history, which will combine with South Floyd this fall to form Floyd Central High School. Allen Central opened in 1971-72, a consolidation of Garrett, Martin, Maytown and Wayland.

 

Johnson Central, now 29-7, was led by Jacob Patton’s two doubles and three runs batted in. Geordon Blanton added a two-run double.

 

Steven Howard, Cameron Nelson and Braydon Hamilton each had singles for the Rebels, who finished 10-26.

 

Chris Brown took the loss.

 

Johnson Central advanced to face Pike Central in the semifinals.

BUCKLEYS CREEK — Pike County Central rallied to score five runs in the top of the seventh inning to stun Pikeville, 6-5, in the opening round of the 15th Region tournament being played at Pike County Central on Memorial Day.

 

Colton Lindsey’s RBI single tied the game at five and D’Sean Pinkleton’s RBI single put the Hawks in front.

 

The Hawks, now 21-16, advanced to the semifinals to face Johnson Central while Pikeville’s season ends at 24-8. The two teams had split during the regular season.

 

Seth Conn had two singles, scored and drove in one run while winning pitcher Brice Elkins singled and scored a pair of runs. Pinkleton collected two hits and batted in one run.

 

Andrew McNamee had two hits, including a double, and scored one run while losing pitcher Nate Brown added two hits, including a double. Tyler Elkins singled, scored twice and drove in one run.

BUCKLEYS CREEK — Shelby Valley’s Chris Gunter blasted a three-run homer in the top of the first inning to highlight a four-run outburst that carried the Wildcats to a 4-2 win over Prestonsburg in the opening round of the 15th Region tournament being played at Pike County Central on Memorial Day.

 

Winning pitcher Jacob Beverly singled, scored and drove in one run as the Wildcats improved to 22-8 and advanced to the semifinals against Paintsville.

 

Shelby Valley managed just three hits. Hunter Mullins singled while Logan Billiter and Ty Riddle each scored.

 

Beverly went the distance, scattering five hits. He struck out seven and walked just one in the complete-game win.

 

Losing pitcher Scott Stapleton had an RBI single in the first inning, scoring Wes Hager who had walked. Stapleton had three hits in the game.

Jake Hyden singled, scored and knocked in one run as the Tigers improved to 18-16 and advanced to face Shelby Valley in the semifinals.

 

Winning pitcher Mason Moore struck out 10 batters, walked two and scattered six hits in going the distance.

 

Tanner Smith doubled and scored.

BUCKLEYS CREEK — Pikeville punched its ticket to the 15th Region tournament championship game with a 13-3 win over Belfry in the second semifinal game played at Pike County Central on May 30.

 

Alexis Stanley and winning pitcher Erica Conn had three hits apiece and each drove in one run as Pikeville improved to 29-6 and advanced to face Johnson Central for the right to advance to the state tournament.

 

Stanley scored three times and Conn twice while Camryn Slone and Catie Rowe had two hits each and drove in one run. Rowe scored twice. Savanna Nunemaker had one hit, scored and batted in two while Emily Hughes added one hit, scored and added an RBI.

 

Kailee Rash suffered the loss as Belfry’s season ended at 22-14.

 

Taylor Maynard had an RBI while Kaelyn Stafford and Linzee Phillips had one hit apiece.

BUCKLEYS CREEK — Johnson Central punched its ticket to the 15th Region tournament championship game with a 9-2 win over Lawrence County in the first semifinal game played at Pike County Central on May 30.

 

Morgan Hopson’s line a three-run triple to break open a close game and sent the Lady Eagles to their 17th win. JC will face Pikeville for the right to advance to the state tournament.

 

Courtney Collins added a solo home run and scored three times while Alyssa Hedrick collected two hits, scored twice and knocked in two runs. Annie Vanhoose added a solo home run.

 

Micailyn Pierce was the winning pitcher while Ciana Bowen suffered the loss.

 

Kassidi Cavins belted a solo home run and drove in two runs while Halli Caudill added four singles as LC finished 17-17.

BUCKLEYS CREEK — Pikeville pounded out 11 hits, including a pair of home runs, and the Lady Panthers cruised to a 14-4 win over Magoffin County in the opening round of the 15th Region tournament being played at Pike County Central on Memorial Day.

 

Winning pitcher Erica Conn and outfielder Savanna Nunemaker each had two hits, including a home run each, as Pikeville improved to 28-6 and advanced to face Belfry in the semifinals.

 

Conn also doubled, scored one run and drove in three while Nunemaker added a double, scored twice and batted in two runs.

 

Alexis Stanley had three hits, including a triple and double, scored four runs and knocked in two while Lindsey McNamee had two hits, scored two runs and batted in one run.

BUCKLEYS CREEK — Johnson Central pitcher Micailyn Pierce outdueled East Ridge hurler Caitlyn Coleman as the Lady Eagles edged the Lady Warriors, 2-1, in the opening round of the 15th Region tournament being played at Pike County Central on Memorial Day.

 

Pierce allowed just two hits as Johnson Central improved to 16-9 and advanced to the semifinals against Lawrence County. East Ridge’s season ends at 17-15.

 

Alaina Castle and Abbi Fannin had two hits each and both drove in one run to lead the Lady Eagles.

 

Britney Tackett collected two hits and drove in the lone East Ridge run.

Wampler scored four times and knocked in three runs as LCC improved to 22-17 and advanced to face Leslie County in the semifinals.

 

Alyssa Franklin added four hits, including a triple and double, scored twice and drove in four runs while Savannah Parson doubled twice, singled, scored a pair of runs and batted in three. Grayson Collier added four hits, including a double, scored four times and knocked in two runs.
