GIRLS

58th District

Lawrence County…66

Betsy Layne………..56

LANGLEY – Lawrence County hit clutch free throws in the final two minutes to hold off Betsy Layne, 66-56, in the opening round of the 58th District tournament played at Floyd Central Gymnasium on Feb. 19.

The Lady Dawgs, now 20-7, beat the Lady Bobcats (11-17) for the third time this season while punching their ticket to the regional tournament.

Megan Frazier finished with 21 points and Destiny Compton added 14 in their final games for Betsy Layne. Caroline Ariaz chipped in nine.

Kendra Spaulding poured in a game-high 25 points for Lawrence County. Lexi Ratliff added 18.

At Langley

PAINTSVILLE – Paintsville was held without a field goal over the final three and one-half minutes as Sheldon Clark stunned the Lady Tigers, 39-36, in the opening round of the 57th District tournament played at Paul R. Setser Fieldhouse on Feb. 19.

Elizabeth Williams tossed in a game-high 17 points and Anna Keeton added 10 as Paintsville’s season ends at 15-11. Presley Chirico added seven points and eight rebounds.

Madison Thompson and Paige Maynard finished with 10 points apiece for the Lady Cardinals (15-12) who punched their ticket to the regional tournament. Thompson also had 20 rebounds, including 16 defensive grabs to finish with a double-double.

PAINTSVILLE – Johnson Central took charge early on against Magoffin County and the Lady Eagles punched their ticket to the regional tournament with a 72-48 win in the 57th District tournament opener played at Paul R. Setser Fieldhouse on Feb. 19.

Ashlee Belcher poured in 17 points and Alaina Castle added 15 as the Lady Eagles improved to 16-12. Jana Jarvis chipped in 13 points.

Kennedi Stacy led all scorers for the Lady Hornets (4-25) with 21 points while Haley Barnett followed with 13.

At Paintsville

ERMINE – Letcher Central’s bid to win the 57th District tournament fell short as Knott Central escaped with a 68-62 win in a game played on Feb. 21.

Brooke Bates led the Lady Cougars (13-17) with 19 points while Emma Maggard added 13. Brooklynn Collins followed with 11 and Loren Boggs chipped in 10.

Jada Higgins paced the Lady Patriots (21-9) with 28 points.

Both teams advanced to the regional tournament.

At Ermine

ERMINE – Letcher Central built a double-digit, halftime lead against June Buchanan and cruised to a 68-52 win in the opening round of the 53rd District tournament played on Feb. 19.

Brooke Bates poured in a game-high 21 points as the Lady Cougars (13-16) punched their ticket to the regional tournament. JBS ends its season at 7-16.

Emma Maggard added 17 and Camryn Parks tossed in 13.

Haley Likens paced the Lady Crusaders with 13 points.

At Ermine

LOGAN, W.Va. – Mingo Central advanced to the semifinals with a 62-32 win over Scott in the girls tournament played at Willie Akers Arena, inside Logan Memorial Fieldhouse on Feb. 19.

The miners, now 12-11 and winners of nine of their last 13 games, advanced to face Logan at Chapmanville.

Xziah Rhodes finished with a game-high 16 points and Katie Ball added 14 in the win.

Hannah Boyd led the Lady Skyhawks (5-18) with 15 points.
