Pike County is mourning the loss of a star athlete. Tyler Williams, 21, of Stone, died Dec. 14 following an ATV crash. He was born Oct. 2, 1993, the son of Mark Ryan and Marsha Kaye Pinson Williams of Stone.  He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Betty Cyrus Williams. He was an active young man, having made many accomplishments in his 21 years. He was a student at University of Pikeville, where he served as a pitcher on the baseball team. PIKEVILLE — Pike County is mourning the loss of a dedicated servant this week. Gene Edward Layne Jr. , the 52-year-old pastor of the Church of God Militant Pillar and Ground of Truth of Pikeville, died Sept. 17. BELFRY — A community is rallying behind the family of a Belfry High School sophomore who lost her battle with cancer this week. Casey “Lou” Michelle Maynard, 15, of South Williamson, died April 5. She was a sophomore at Belfry High School who was diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma 1. 5 years ago. Since then, she has inspired Belfry and the Pond Creek community with her strength, faith and hope. Dr. Mahendra Varia, 78, died Sunday, Feb. 16 at his home in Martin. He was born in Jamnagar, India to the late Rangildas and Diwaliben Varia. WHITESBURG — Patricia Gish, who worked with her husband Tom Gish to publish The Mountain Eagle in Whitesburg for more than 50 years, died April 13 at her home. She was 87 years old.
